Codex decision guide
ChatGPT Codex plans: which tier gives you enough usage?
Codex is bundled with eligible ChatGPT plans; GPT Go does not sell a separate Codex subscription or credit pack. Choose the plan that gives you enough room for your normal coding week. Start with Plus for moderate work, move to Pro 5x after repeated Plus limits, and choose Pro 20x only when 5x still stops a normal workflow.

Which ChatGPT plan do you need for Codex?
For moderate coding between other work, Plus is the sensible starting point. Pro 5x is the first capacity upgrade for daily Codex sessions. Pro 20x is for all-day or highly parallel agent work. Business is a team-workspace decision, not simply a larger personal plan.
| Plan | GPT Go price | Codex fit | Upgrade signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | $23.25 / month | Moderate sessions and occasional agent work | You hit the Codex window most weeks |
| Pro 5x | $129 / month | Daily heavy coding and repeated agent runs | 5x still runs out during a normal week |
| Pro 20x | $189.99 / month | All-day production and parallel agent workflows | Capacity is part of your main work output |
| Business seat | $28.34 / month | A managed workspace with separate users | The problem is team access, not one person's capacity |
The two Pro labels describe headroom, not an exact number of prompts or tool calls. OpenAI controls the actual limits, the rolling window and which features are available. Check the usage indicator in ChatGPT and OpenAI's current plan documentation before assuming a tier will fit a precise workload.
Is Codex a separate subscription?
No. On the plans that include it, Codex usage is part of the ChatGPT plan. There is no GPT Go “Codex recharge” product that adds a separate coding balance to the same account.
The plan carries the allowance
When Codex is included, moving the account to a higher ChatGPT tier changes the plan that carries the coding allowance.
The API is separate
OpenAI API usage and credit are a different billing system. Buying API credit does not automatically increase the Codex allowance inside a ChatGPT subscription.
Business is a workspace
A Business seat relates to team membership and administration. It is not a universal shortcut to unlimited Codex use.
How do Codex limits work?
Codex uses plan-based windows that reset over time. The same plan can feel generous for one large refactor and restrictive for many small agent sessions because the work consumes the allowance differently.
Before upgrading, identify the exact block. A plan usage limit is different from an API quota, repository authentication problem, network failure or model-capacity message. The Codex usage-limits guide walks through the diagnostics. If the indicator clearly shows that the plan window is spent, then capacity is the issue.
One outcome per run
Give Codex a bounded task instead of asking it to explore the entire repository and make an open-ended set of changes.
Trim the context
Remove irrelevant files and repeat unnecessary instructions. More context is not automatically better when it dilutes the task.
Stop failed loops
If a run is repeating the same failing command, stop it and diagnose the blocker. Letting it loop consumes the window without producing progress.
Batch related edits
A coherent set of changes is often more efficient than starting a new session for every line of code.
When does a Pro Codex plan pay for itself?
Compare the price gap with the billable work that the larger allowance recovers. A $105.75 Plus-to-5x difference costs $35.25 per recovered hour if it recovers only three hours a month, but $17.63 per hour if it recovers six.
| Upgrade | Monthly difference | Recovered hours needed for a $30/hour effective cost |
|---|---|---|
| Plus to Pro 5x | $105.75 | About 3.5 hours |
| Plus to Pro 20x | $166.74 | About 5.6 hours |
| Pro 5x to Pro 20x | $60.99 | About 2 hours |
This is a break-even aid, not a promise about your usage. If you are paid more than $30 an hour and the larger plan recovers more than those hours, the upgrade can be cheaper than the delay. If the limit only costs you a few minutes of patience, Plus remains the better-value plan.
Which Codex tier should you choose?
Use two weeks of evidence. Count the number of working days when Codex stops before you finish the intended task, then choose the smallest tier that removes most of those interruptions.
Choose Plus
You code between other responsibilities, do a few substantial sessions a week and can plan around an occasional reset.
Choose Pro 5x
Codex is part of most workdays, Plus limits arrive every week and the delay affects delivery or billable output.
Choose Pro 20x
You already know that 5x is insufficient because long-running or parallel agent work consumes it before the week is over.
Do not choose Business merely because it looks close to Plus in price. Business is for a team workspace with separate seats and administration. If you are one person who needs more Codex capacity, the decision is Plus versus the two Pro tiers.
How do you move your Codex allowance up a tier?
Because Codex follows the ChatGPT plan, the recharge is a ChatGPT plan top up. Confirm the account, choose the higher tier and verify the new plan after delivery.
- 1
Confirm the current plan
Check which ChatGPT plan carries the Codex access today and whether you already have an official subscription that may affect renewal.
- 2
Pick the smallest sufficient tier
Compare Plus, Pro 5x and Pro 20x using the live product cards. Current price, stock and delivery mode are shown there.
- 3
Pay and track the order
Use Stripe with a card or wallet. Keep the order number and use the order page while the plan is applied.
- 4
Verify Codex follows the plan
Open ChatGPT after delivery and confirm the new tier and usage indicator. No separate Codex key or password is required.
ChatGPT Codex plans FAQ
Does Codex cost extra on top of ChatGPT?
On eligible plans, Codex is bundled with the ChatGPT plan rather than sold as a separate consumer subscription. API usage is a separate billing system and does not automatically change the in-product Codex allowance.
Which plan is best for Codex?
Plus is enough for moderate use. Pro 5x is the first capacity tier for daily heavy work, and Pro 20x is for work that still exceeds 5x during a normal week.
Can I buy Codex credits from GPT Go?
GPT Go does not sell a standalone Codex credit product. The recharge path is a ChatGPT plan top up that changes the plan carrying Codex usage.
Why does Codex run out so quickly?
Long sessions, repeated failed loops, excessive context and parallel tasks consume the plan window faster. Diagnose the usage pattern before paying for a larger tier.
Should I choose Pro 5x or Pro 20x?
Choose 5x first if Plus is insufficient but you do not yet know the size of the gap. Choose 20x only if 5x already fails during ordinary work.
Is Business better for Codex?
Business is better only when a team needs separate seats and administration. A solo heavy Codex user should compare Plus and Pro instead.
Compare the live Codex-capable plans
Choose the smallest ChatGPT tier that removes the recurring limit, then top up the account you already use.
