Gift card guide
Can you use a ChatGPT Go gift card?
Yes, an official OpenAI gift card can fund ChatGPT Go, but only under strict conditions. It is a US-dollar wallet balance available in the United States for US-based ChatGPT accounts. The card is redeemed on ChatGPT web, the full balance goes to one account, and it cannot pay Apple or Google Play subscriptions. GPT Go does not accept gift cards for its own checkout.

Can you use an OpenAI gift card for ChatGPT Go?
Yes. OpenAI lists ChatGPT Go among the plans that can use a redeemed gift card balance, provided the account is US-based and billed in USD.
| Question | Official gift card | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Where can it be purchased? | Participating US retailers | Buy only from an authorized retailer |
| What currency? | USD | The balance does not cover purchases billed in another currency |
| Where can it redeem? | ChatGPT web | Use chatgpt.com/redeem, not an app-store checkout |
| Can it fund Go? | Yes | The account must meet location, billing and balance rules |
| Can it pay Apple or Google Play? | No | Store-billed subscriptions are excluded |
| Can the balance move accounts? | No | Confirm the account before redeeming the PIN |
A gift card adds funds to the OpenAI wallet; it does not automatically start Go or change the current plan. After redemption, choose the eligible subscription on ChatGPT web and review how much balance is applied.
How do you redeem an OpenAI gift card?
Sign into the exact ChatGPT account or eligible workspace, open the official redemption page, and enter the gift card PIN. The full card value is loaded at once.
- 1
Confirm the recipient account
Sign in with the intended ChatGPT account. Gift card balances cannot be moved after redemption.
- 2
Open the official redeem page
Visit chatgpt.com/redeem on the web instead of relying on a link from an unverified message.
- 3
Enter the PIN privately
Treat the PIN like money. Do not post it in chat, social media or support forums.
- 4
Check Settings → Billing
Confirm the wallet balance and look for a Gift card transaction in transaction history.
- 5
Choose an eligible Go purchase
Select the eligible subscription on ChatGPT web and review the balance applied and any remaining amount due.
The complete card value is redeemed. OpenAI does not let you redeem part of a card now and give the rest to another account. Promotions and trials may still require a payment method even when a wallet balance is available.
Can you give a ChatGPT Go gift card to someone else?
You can buy an official gift card as a gift, but the recipient must meet the US location and USD billing requirements. The card remains a payment instrument until the recipient redeems it.
Buy from an authorized retailer
Use a participating US retailer and keep its order confirmation. The retailer handles delivery and unused-card activation issues.
Confirm eligibility first
Do not send a US gift card to someone outside the eligible region or someone whose ChatGPT account is billed in another currency.
Redeem into the right account
The recipient should sign into the account they intend to keep. A redeemed balance cannot be transferred later.
A gift card is different from a promotional code, free-trial invitation and GPT Go direct top-up. Each uses different eligibility, delivery and refund rules.
Does GPT Go accept OpenAI gift cards?
No. GPT Go checkout accepts cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay through Stripe; it does not accept an OpenAI wallet balance or a gift card PIN as payment.
| Route | Payment | Renewal | Account |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Go with gift card | Redeemed wallet balance on ChatGPT web | Official ChatGPT subscription rules apply | Must meet US and USD conditions |
| GPT Go one-month top-up | Card, Apple Pay or Google Pay through Stripe | No GPT Go auto-renewal | Applied to your own ChatGPT account |
Choose GPT Go when an official gift card is unavailable or you only want one month without creating a recurring official subscription. Keep the order number and checkout email for delivery and support.
Why is the gift card not working?
Gift card failures usually come from location, currency, account or redemption-state mismatch. Check the exact error before buying another card.
| Problem | Likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid PIN | Typo, inactive card or suspended card | Check the PIN and contact the retailer |
| Already redeemed | The card was loaded to an account | Check transaction history in the intended account |
| Wrong country | Account or purchase is outside the US eligibility rules | Do not buy another US card for an ineligible account |
| Wrong currency | The purchase is billed in a currency other than USD | A USD wallet balance will not cover that charge |
| Wrong account | PIN was redeemed into another ChatGPT login | The balance cannot be transferred; contact OpenAI support |
| App-store purchase | Apple or Google Play checkout cannot use the wallet | Use an eligible ChatGPT web checkout |
For unused-card delivery or activation, contact the retailer. For a PIN already redeemed into the wrong account or another wallet issue, contact OpenAI Support and never share the full PIN publicly.
